Eustolio Rivera de la Cruz

Eustolio Rivera de la Cruz is the present traditional governor of the Huichol Yw’rata community. He is the father of Modesto Rivera and is the Mara’akame (singer or healer). He is in charge of making decisions for the community and of maintaining equilibrium in the families of the community. He is also the person in charge of carrying out the ceremonies and the pilgrimage to Wirikuta, the sacred place of the Huichol People in the desert of San Luis Potosí, north of Mexico City.

He belongs to the Jesus Maria Association of Traditional Doctors in the municipality of Nayar, Nayarit.

2002

He participated as a traditional doctor in the XVIII National Celebration of Medicinal Plants in San Pedro Atlapulco, in the State of Mexico.

He participated in the NATIONAL FORUM IN DEFENSE OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE, which took place in San Pedro Atlapulco, in the State of Mexico.

2003

He participated as a traditional doctor in the area of healing in the XIX National Celebration of Medicinal Plants, which took place in Cherán, Michoacán.

He participated as a representative of traditional Huichol medicine in the 7th National Meeting of Medicinal Plants, Gastronomy, Arts, Indigenous Languages and Alternative Therapy, which took place in Torreón, Coahuila.

2004

He participated as a traditional doctor in the XX National Celebration of Medicinal Plants, which took place in Xochitepec, Morelos.

He participated as a representative of traditional Huichol medicine in the 8th Meeting of Medicinal Plants, Gastronomy, Arts, Indigenous Languages and Alternative Therapy, which took place in Torreón, Coahuila.

He was the organizer of the Fire Ceremony in the Regional Meeting of Traditional, Natural, and Alternative Medicine, which took place in Xalisco, Nayarit.

By special invitation, he demonstrated the use and customs of Huichol traditional medicine as a special guest of the Universidad Iberoamericana at the “Manos Abiertas Art Fair”.

2005

He participated as a representative of traditional Huichol medicine in the 9th National Meeting of Medicinal Plants, Gastronomy, Arts, Indigenous Languages and Alternative Therapy, which took place in Torreón, Coahuila.

He was the organizer of the Fire Ceremony in the Regional Meeting of Traditional, Natural, and Alternative Medicine, which took place in La Labor, Nayarit.

He was a special invited participant of the presentation and talk about Huichol art that took place in the United States at the Latino Arts Inc. Gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He was a special invited participant of the “IV Round Table of Teotihuacán: Beyond the City” in the conference entitled “To save our traditional customs, and ceremonial centers,” which took place in Teotihuacán, in the State of Mexico.

He was a special invited participant of the Universidad Iberoamericana at the Conference of Traditional Huichol Medicine.
